Identity theft is a hot topic these days. We frequently hear news stories and wonder, "Can that happen to me?" Identity theft can happen to almost anyone, but there are ways to protect yourself.

To help prevent the threat of identity theft here are a few helpful suggestions:

  • Check your credit report annually.
  • Review your bills and statements on a regular basis.
  • Guard your mail and trash from theft. An easy way to do this is by shredding items containing personal identifying information.
  • Use caution when giving out personal information.
  • Copy all the contents of your wallet or purse.
  • Report lost or stolen checks or credit cards immediately.
